Details of service:

Local Housing Allowance is a new way of working out Housing Benefit entitlement for private sector claimants. This will take effect from 7 April 2008.

Currently when tenants claim housing benefit their rent is referred to the rent officer, who agrees an individual market rent appropriate to that property.

From 7th April 2008 there will be a set amount for each type of property. For example all two bedroom flats will be assessed at the same level of rent regardless of condition of property. This only affects private sector tenants who make a new benefit application, change address or have a break in claim.
