They manage the whole process from developing the Local Plan all the way through to ensuring historic buildings are preserved for future generations. It also deals with climate change and conservation issues, listed buildings and archaeology

Development Control (Planning) deals with the 'planning' stage of development:
• Where the building will be built
• What it is going to look like
They make decisions based upon the policies from local planning policy and national government guidance.

Planning reception and duty officer appointments Please note the duty officer service will not be available on Wednesdays until further notice.
Planning Policy also known as 'Local Development Plans' The local plans are made up of the current policy document, Local Plan Review and the new policy plans, the Local Development Framework (LDF). These plans are used to guide the decisions made by the planning service. The LDF City Centre Action Plan is now also available for public comment.
Building Control is responsible for making sure that the materials a building will be made from and how it is to be built meet the Building Regulations. It also deals with:
• Dangerous structures
• Demolition of buildings
• Safety at sports grounds
• Entertainment
• Licensing
• Building accessibility for disabled people
Historic Environment gives advice about all aspects of Southampton's historic environment including:
• Scheduled monuments
• Listed buildings
• Locally listed buildings
• The Buildings at Risk Register
• Buildings in conservation areas
• Archaeology and development control
• Parks and gardens of special historic interest.
It also maintains the Southampton Historic Environment Record (formerly the Sites and Monuments Record).
Transport Policy section The transport policy section covers all areas of transport within the city. This includes accessibility, air quality, road safety and public transport.
Sustainability This section ensures the built environment meets the needs of people now without causing any problems for people in the future. They make sure that what we propose and eventually build will be something that will last and not further damage the fragile environment.
