Part P (Electrical Safety) FAQ
- Do I have to submit a Building Regulation application when replacing a light fitting in my home? Small jobs such as provision of a socket-outlet or a light switch on an existing circuit will not need to be notified to Building Control (although there will be some exceptions for high risk areas such as kitchens and bathrooms).
- I’m doing a kitchen extension, will I have to apply for Part P compliance? All work that involves adding a new circuit to a dwelling, or electrical work in kitchens and bathrooms will need to be notified to Building Control or carried out by a competent person who is registered with a Part P Self-Certification Scheme.
- How do I know if my electrician is registered with a competent person scheme? There are 5 schemes in operation where the electrician can carry out any electrical work and 5 schemes where the electrician can carry out limited work relevant to his profession (i.e. kitchen fitters, garage door fitters, alarm installers).
