The Historic Environment Team maintains a list of about 90 locally important historic buildings. This is separate from the national list of Listed Buildings held by the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport. There is no statutory protection for buildings on the Local List, although there have been several cases nationwide where inappropriate alterations have been successfully rejected at Appeal. Where planning permission is required for the redevelopment of a Locally Listed Building, it may need to be professionally recorded beforehand.
For all buildings on the current Local List, see the related document to the right of this page. For a map, see the MapSouthampton web site.
The criteria for inclusion of buildings on the Local List are:
- Authenticity
- Architectural significance
- Historic significance
- Townscape significance
For more information about these criteria, follow the link below.
At present, the Local List covers the area of the Single Regeneration Project II (St Mary's to Portswood). In 2004 and 2005 the Historic Environment Team undertook a review of the Local List. Members of the public were asked to send in suggestions for buildings to add to the list. Following this consultation, in 2005 a list of proposed additions was drawn up (see the related document to the right of this page). The proposed additions have not yet been formally approved.
We still welcome your views and suggestions for buildings to add to the Local List. This may take the form of an individual response, or could be a proposal from a group, society or a school. Copies of the Proposal Form are available from the Civic Centre and main libraries in the city, and the form can also be downloaded from one of the document links to the right of this page.
Southampton City Council's policy on locally listed buildings and development is outlined in the Local Plan.
