Core Strategy: Planning Southampton to 2026

(Also known as: Southampton Spatial Strategy )

The aim of the planning system is to achieve an excellent layout for developments such as buildings, parks and streets providing an attractive environment in which to live, work and enjoy. Successful planning produces a city which looks and feels good. In order for this to happen new development must be 'sustainable'. The Core Strategy is a major document that will form the overall spatial vision and development framework for Southampton looking towards 2026.

The intention of the plan is to help create a better Southampton and it will become a key part of all of the planning documents known as the 'Local Development Framework'. The plan is closely related to the draft City of Southampton Strategy, details are available from the Southampton Partnership website. The Core Strategy will also include a broad spatial vision for the city and key objectives for achieving this.

The Core Strategy has to go through certain procedures to be produced in accordance with Government and Regional planning policy. We have already sought initial views on the Core Strategy and gone out for two rounds of consultation in May - July 2006, and October - December 2006. The 'Preferred Options' was the second stage of a six stage process and outlines the Council’s desired strategic policy direction.

Taking the comments received into consideration, we have now produced the proposed Submission version of the Core Strategy. This has been approved by the Council's Cabinet on the 27th October 2008 and the Council Meeting on the 19th November 2008.

The proposed Submission Core Strategy will be going out to public consultation between 18th December 2008 and 4th February 2009, with a view to submission to the Government in March 2009.

Information on potential development sites

For both the Core Strategy and the Site Allocations Development Plan we require information on potential development sites within the city. The request for information on potential development sites closed on the 21st July 2008. The information we have been provided with is important as it is helping to formulate planning policies for the city.
