If you are operating a home boarding or dog sitting service within Southampton, you require a licence.

Performing animals certificate

Required for persons who exhibit or train for exhibition, any animal other than invertebrates. Persons convicted of an offence under the Performing Animals (Regulation) Act 1925 or of an offence under any of sections 4, 5, 6(1) and (2), 7 to 9 and 11 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 are excluded from holding this licence.

Dangerous animal licence

You need a licence to keep some animals considered to be wild, dangerous or exotic.

Pet shop licence

A pet shop licence is required by anyone operating a business of selling animals as pets from any premises. This does not apply to people only breeding pedigree animals and selling the offspring. Persons convicted of an offence under the Pet Animals Act 1951, the Protection of Animals Act 1911 or of an offence under any of sections 4, 5, 6(1) and (2), 7 to 9 and 11 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 are excluded from holding a licence.

Zoo

If you want to run a zoo apply to the council where the whole or majority of the zoo will be located. You’ll need a zoo licence if you’ll be displaying wild animals to the public for at least 7 days a year, in any place that’s not a circus or pet shop.
