Estates Excellence - We're coming to Southampton
Estates Excellence is an innovative health and safety scheme offering help to small and medium sized businesses. Southampton City Council are working with businesses, the Health & Safety Executive, Fire & Rescue, the Police, Business Link, the NHS and others to provide safer, healthier places to work.
Instead of the traditional inspection and enforcement approach, Estates Excellence helps businesses to sensibly manage risk and therefore reduce work place injuries and ill health. With free health and safety assessments and a range of other tools to assist businesses become safer all in one place we can save businesses time and money.
With a focus on industrial estates we also aim to promote links between businesses to provide advice, information and services in a way that is best for business. Employees will be offered free health checks and advice with a bus visiting all industrial estates.
Each company is visited by a member of the Estates Excellence team who will offer to help them assess their knowledge of risks and offer free advice and help. This help is to enable them to make their businesses more effective - which in the long run will make financial savings for them and reduce costs. This service is also offered to the landlords who rent their buildings to businesses.
There are free training sessions on offer to Southampton's small and medium size businesses, the sessions include training on health and safety leadership skills, fire safety and site security and also healthy living sessions aimed at staff on issues such as how to quit smoking. The added bonus for those businesses that take part is the opportunity to achieve the Estates Excellence Participation Award which demonstrates that they are a responsible company that takes health and safety seriously.
Estates Excellence is all about giving businesses reliable advice and information they need to make their own sensible decisions about how to provide a healthy and safe working environment. This is far better than trying to resolve problems after accidents have happened or staff have become ill.
The City Council also wants to know what else they can do to help businesses locally and there will be 'Open for Business' drop-in sessions with experts from across the council and elsewhere ready to listen and help.
So if you are interested in taking part in the Estates Excellence or want to know more about the free training register on the HSE website and look out for updates on this page.
