Environmental Health registers people who practice acupuncture or who run a business offering tattooing, semi-permanent skin colouring (also known as micro-pigmentation or temporary tattooing), electrolysis, or cosmetic piercing including ear piercing. We also operate an Approved Piercer scheme for body piercers who meet even higher standards. This page tells you how to register your business, and it lists Southampton’s Approved Piercers.
Two types of registration are required:
1. Each person who carries on the business of tattooing, cosmetic piecing, semi-permanent skin colouring, cosmetic piercing (including ear piercing) or electrolysis; or each person that carries on the practice of acupuncture.
Please use the link to the right to download an application form. When you return the completed application form to us including payment, we will arrange to meet you, inspect your premises, equipment, policies and procedures and if satisfactory, we will issue a registration certificate.
2. Each premises where these activities are undertaken.
Individual employees of a business do not need to be registered.
If you are self-employed and work in registered premises, then you need to be registered separately.
The fees from 1 April 2009 until 31 March 2010 are £112.00 for the premises and £58.00 for each practitioner. If you only pierce ears (acupuncture and electrolysis) then there is a reduced fee of £58.00 for the premises and £32.00 for each practitioner.

Approved Piercers
These companies are on the approved list because they have met standards over and above the minimum legal requirement set by Southampton City Council. This does not mean to say that other companies are not satisfactory; these ones have just gone ‘the extra mile’.
