Skip operators licence

Licence summary

Wherever possible skips should not be placed on the public highway, however if this is unavoidable and you wish to place a skip on the public highway you will need to contact a registered Skip Provider who will apply to us for a licence on your behalf.

If you are already registered with us, you can apply for a licence using our online Skip Database

Licences can only be granted to skip companies which have been which have been registered with Southampton City Council.

Eligibility criteria

Who can apply for this licence: Skip Providers Only

If you are a skip operator and would like to register with us, please provide the documents outlined below.

Required Documentation:
• Evidence of £10 million Public Liability Insurance
• Waste Traders Licence

Fees may be applicable and conditions attached

An administration fee will be applicable for each licence processed for the placement of skips on the public highway as of the 01/04/10 these will be as follows:

• Mini - Standard skips £11 per week
• Roll On/Off skips £45.00 for the first week with subsequent weeks at £11 thereafter

Application evaluation process

We will endeavour to process your application as quickly as possible. Due to the nature of this licence and third party interest we will aim to grant licences within 1 week of the application being made. This however is subject to receiving all of the required documentation.


Will tacit consent apply?

No. It is in the public interest that the authority must process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from the local authority within a reasonable period, please contact us. You can do this online if you applied through the UK Welcomes service or use the contact details below.

Failed application redress

Please contact your Local Authority in the first instance.
Any applicant who is refused a licence can appeal to their local Magistrates' court.


Licence holder redress

Please contact your Local Authority in the first instance.
Any licence holder who wishes to appeal against a condition attached to their licence can appeal to their local Magistrates' court.


Consumer complaint

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the trader by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Consumer Direct will give you advice. From outside the UK contact the UK European Consumer Centre.
