Business Rates FAQs

1. Do I have to complete a new DD form each year?

No – but please make sure you notify us of any changes in circumstances or bank details

2. Do I have to complete a new SBRR form each year?

No – the current application will remain valid for the duration of the current rating list – through to 01/04/2015.

Please note however you must inform us of any changes in circumstances that might invalidate your eligibility.

3. Why does my bill show arrears when I have paid?

Please check with the business rates office if you have any query regarding your payments, some payments can be delayed in reaching your account.

4. Can I receive my bill electronically?

To date we are not able to send bills electronically.

5. How can I find out what the rates are on a property I am interested in?

The business rates office can advise you on the charges payable on a property

6. How do I register for Business Rates?

You can complete the notification form and send it to the business rates office or telephone.

7. How is the business rates money collected spent?

All business rates collected are sent to central government for distribution to local authorities.

8. What is my rateable value?

You can view your rateable value on line @ www.voa.gov.uk

9. Can I appeal against my rateable value?

Details regarding appeals against your rateable value can be found on the Valuation website. Please use the link at the bottom of the page.

10. I have business premises that I rent out – who is liable for the rates?

Liability lies with the individual or company that has beneficial occupation of the premises

11. I only use part of my premises. Is there any relief available?

12. My business is suffering financial hardship. What can I do?

14. What happens or what should I do if I am unable to pay my rates?

Please contact the business rates office if you have any concerns regarding your ability to pay

15. Why have I received a Summons?

Summons are issued as part of the recovery process – please contact the office to discuss a payment arrangement

16. Do I have to attend court?

No

17. Will my credit rating be affected if I receive a summons?

No

18. What is a liability order – what powers does it give the council?

A Liability Order is issued by the Magistrates Court confirming liability for the debt – this enable the council to pursue the debt further

19. Why have I received a letter from the bailiff – what should I do?

You should contact the bailiff’s office

20. Can I pay the council rather than the bailiff?

Direct payments will not be refused – however any remaining bailiff costs will remain payable to the bailiff

21. Why do I have costs to pay?

All costs incurred during the recovery of debts process have to be paid

22. How is the business rate charge calculated?

23. Do I have to pay when the property is empty?
