The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 apply when a business is selling goods or services to consumers via the internet, telephone or any other way where no face to face contact is made with a consumer to discuss a service or examine goods. Some contracts are exempt such as those made for leisure services.
The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 require certain information to be given to consumers before they agree to enter the contract, for example the identity of the business, delivery details and cancellation rights.
Further information is required to be given in writing once the consumer has entered the contract. This includes how the consumer can cancel the contract, details of any guarantees, after sales services and a geographical address for complaints.
The Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002 require further information to be displayed when a service, normally provided on request for payment at a distance, is carried out by way of electronic equipment.
