Background to Junior wardens
The scheme is part of the Neighbourhood warden scheme and aims to make real differences to the lives of people living in Southampton's neighbourhoods.
The Junior neighbourhood warden scheme was launched as a pilot in the West of the city in October 2003 with funding from the Neighbourhoods partnership. One year later it proved such a success that the city council bid for funding from The Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF) to extend it to cover the whole city. From the start of 2006 this was achieved.
As well as contributing to a cleaner and safer environment the scheme enables the young people to meet new friends, develop new skills and ultimately have fun.
Southampton City Council has received recognition from across the country. The scheme, including the Streetscene Award 2005 from the Municipal Journal, has also been commended by the Local Government Chronicle in 2006 for its environmental work. Many other local authorities have contacted us to ask for advice and suggestions on how to set up similar projects.
