Southampton COVID-19 Testing Programme

Knowing who has COVID-19 is vital to stopping its spread.

This aim of this Programme is to evaluate the use of coronavirus saliva testing in educational settings, such as schools and universities. It is led by a partnership between the University of Southampton, Southampton City Council and the NHS and follows a successful testing pilot run by the same group in the summer.

This Programme uses a convenient, non-invasive saliva test to check for coronavirus, with results sent by text message within 48 hours. It is being paid for by the Government as a service evaluation, funded by the Department for Health and Social Care.

The learnings from this initiative will help our country plan for potential wider population testing over the coming months, slow the transmission of the virus in Southampton and help activities in educational settings to restart as safely as possible.

1 Who can take partSHOW

Currently the Programme is open to staff and pupils in four schools in Southampton, as well as students and various members of staff at the University of Southampton.

You will be contacted directly if you have been selected to be tested. Please do not contact the Programme team if you have not received an invitation.

Don't forget that anyone who currently has coronavirus symptoms can get a free NHS test today.

2 What to expect from the saliva testSHOW

Participants will be asked to provide saliva sample using a pot provided in their simple test pack. This will be sent for laboratory testing and the result will be sent via text message within 48 hours.

This test does not tell participants whether they had the virus in the past, and a negative result does not protect them from catching it in the future. Individuals participating in the Programme still need to follow government guidelines, including social distancing and hygiene measures.

5 Test resultsSHOW

Please note that you will not receive a certificate that is valid for travel or other purposes.
