Results of the Options for Barbeque use in Southampton’s Open Spaces

The increased popularity of disposable barbeques has offered another way for people to get outside, enjoy their green open spaces and strengthen community links with their neighbours. Unfortunately this may cause problems with burnt turf, damage to benches, potential problems of fires or danger to small children and pets.

So we have been looking at how these issues have been tackled across the country and what might be the best way to facilitate happy alfresco eating in our parks.

To help us reach the best solution so we can meet the aspirations of the Green Space Strategy, we invited people to give us their views on the subject. We set out four options which we think might address these issues, and asked for your preferences.

Option 1: Do nothing and continue with the current situation.
Option 2: Provide portable stands to allow barbeques anywhere with reduced damage.
Option 3: Provide specific barbeque areas
Option 4- Ban Barbeques in all parks

For more information on the 4 options and the pros and cons please see the attached document.

The survey is now closed and the results of the consultation are available below.
