New Parliamentary Boundaries - consultation

The Boundary Commission for England has published proposals for new constituency boundaries in England. The consultation ran for for 12 weeks and ended on Monday 5 December 2011. The results will be available in spring 2012.

The key points are:

  • The overall aim nationally is to reduce the current 533 constituencies to 502.

  • With one exception (the Isle of Wight) all constituencies must have an electoral range of between 72,810 and 80,473

  • There are currently 84 constituencies in the south east region and the proposal is to reduce that by one to 83 - although many boundaries (and constituency names) have been amended slightly to achieve this.

The proposed Southampton Constituencies will be:

  • Southampton Itchen (Bargate, Bevois, Bitterne Park, Harefield, Peartree, Sholing and Woolston Wards and;

  • Southampton Test ( Bassett, Coxford, Freemantle, Millbrook, Portswood, Redbridge, Shirley Wards – from Southampton and also including Chilworth, Nursling and Rownhams Wards from Test Valley).

  • Swaythling ward will form part of the Eastleigh constituency and Bitterne Ward will form part of Hedge and Hamble constituency both of which will be administered by Eastleigh Borough Council
