The Town Crier

The city's Town Crier is John Melody.

John took up office as Town Crier after entering a competition that took place at The Bargate on 24 February 2004. All contestants wrote and delivered a cry on a subject of their choice and they were also given a short proclamation to read, at five minutes notice, on the subject of Southampton's 40th birthday. John certainly has the voice for the job: his ear-splitting, 104-decibel cry broke the instrument brought in to measure the volume achieved by each of the contestants.

A resident of Shirley, John was born in Warrington and moved to Southampton in 1967. He taught at St Marys College and spent 25 years teaching at Southampton City College. His interests include collecting car badges, walking and swimming.

As the city's Town Crier, John acts as master of ceremonies at major events, such as the annual mayor-making. He also may make guest appearances in support of local charities so if you would like to book him to attend your event, please contact the Mayors Office on 023 8083 2433.
