Any person who lives on a boat within the UK and who meets the age and nationality criteria should be included on a electoral register after completing the necessary registration process.
When the boat, houseboat or other residence has a permanent mooring, the residents must be registered as ordinary electors. The property itself must also be canvassed and treated as a qualifying address.
If the boat or other residence does not have a permanent mooring, the residents, on application, should be registered by means of a declaration of local connection. The electors should be registered at a place they spend the most time or where they have some connection such as the area where they were last permanently registered or any boatyard they may use for maintenance.
A declaration of local connection is valid for 12 months. A reminder will be issued by the Electoral Services Office at the appropriate time.
If you are unable to attend at your allocated polling station to vote in person you can choose to vote by post or by proxy (someone voting on your behalf).
Please note that at the time of an election there will be deadlines for receipt of applications to register and to vote by post or by proxy.
