European Parliamentary Elections take place every five years and were last held in all member states between 4 – 7 June 2009. Voting took place in the UK on Thursday 4 June 2009 with the result announced on Sunday 7 June.
Southampton City Council electoral area falls within the South East Region and the Regional Returning Officer is Mark Heath, Southampton's Solicitor to the Council and Returning Officer.
The South East Region elected 10 Members of the European Parliament.
All local returning officers within the region conducted their count of votes on Sunday 7 June and sent the results to the regional returning officer who calculated the result under the D’Hondt system. He announced the 10 successful candidates to be appointed in the South East Region.

Members of the European Union other than United Kingdom, Cyprus and Malta choose whether to have their vote in their own member state or within the UK. Members choosing to vote within the UK needed to complete and return a European Parliament Voter Registration form to be eligible to vote in this country.
