As an employee you will have the opportunity to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). This scheme provides high-quality pension benefits currently based on final pay.

The LGPS is a contributory scheme where employees currently pay 6% of earnings towards their pension and the council pays the balance of the cost of providing your benefits, these costs will vary, but generally the employee contributes about one third and the council around two-thirds. In return the LGPS provides a full range of benefits, including the following.

• A pension based on your final
• The ability to increase your pension by paying extra contributions
• An ill-health pension from any age
• Redundancy cover from age 50

• Children’s pensions
• Index- linking of benefits to ensure they keep pace with inflation

If you pay into a company, occupational or personal pension scheme you can ask for the benefits you have built up to be transferred into the LGPS.

You must tell your line manager within 12 months of joining that you want to transfer your benefits.
