There are many leave benefits for working for Southampton City Council.

All full time employees are entitled to a minimum of twenty three days holiday in a full year. For part time employees, leave entitlement is based on terms and conditions of employment (comtracted hours/days). Generally, employees are entitled to National Bank and Public Holidays although, in some sections, special arrangements apply due to the nature of the work and local agreements.
The Council recognises that some employees may, from time to time, require time off for Bereavement or other compassionate purposes. Requests are made to line managers and will be considered individually, based on the circumstances of the case and the impact on the service provided.
Employees are entitled to Ordinary Maternity Leave of 26 weeks and Additional Maternity Leave of a further 26 weeks. Statutory Maternity Pay will be paid if the employee is employed in the qualifying week, which is the 15th week before the expected week of confinement and has been employed without a break for at least 26 weeks prior to the 15th week. Employee’s who have one year or more continuous Local Government service at the beginning of the 11th week before the Expected Week of Confinement will be entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay @ 90% of a weeks pay for the first six weeks and if she declares in writing her intention to return to work with the Council for a minimum of three calendar months, she will receive half pay for 12 weeks this will be in addition to Statutory Maternity Pay (this will not exceed normal full pay).

Five days paid leave is allowed for the child’s father or the partner or nominated carer of an expectant mother to coincide with the birth of a child. The leave should be taken immediately prior to, during, or after the period of confinement.
There is a statutory right to two weeks paternity leave paid at the same rate of pay as Statutory Maternity Pay, however the council allows the first week to be paid at full pay under Maternity Support Arrangements.
Unpaid leave for parents is allowed (subject to agreement with your line manager), up to a maximum of 13 weeks before the childs 5th birthday.
Adoption Leave is granted to enable an employee to adopt a child and help settle the child into the family. Further details on adoption leave will be available from your Manager or Hr/Payroll (please contact us using the details below for more information).
