Southampton is a clean city. Independent inspectors found our city streets to be 98% clean, making Southampton in the top 25% of cities in the UK. (Clean is defined as no litter visible or small items of litter only.)

Over the last few years our performance has improved from 90% clean streets in 2000 to 98% in 2005. We now need to find the extra 2% with your help. If you can tell us what and where the cleaning problem is we will visit within 2 days and tackle the issue within 2 weeks.

Smarter cleaning

Every area of the city has a local cleansing team, targeting cleaning where it is needed. An area team will visit your street at least once a month and depending on the need, will either litter pick, sweep or deep clean it.

We also have specialist teams to quickly tackle graffiti, flyposting and flytipping.

Hotspots of frequently littered areas are targeted on a daily basis. These include shopping parades and routes to school.

Cleaning hard to reach places

Street sparkle is a new operation allowing us to clean streets that are always full of cars. Vehicle owners are required to avoid parking in the road for a three hour slot when the team can move in to deep clean the street, pavement, gully and street signs.

Tough on enviro crimes

Last year we issued over 260 £50 fixed penalty notices for littering and dog fouling. Our biggest litter problem is now the cigarette butt and people caught discarding them are issued fixed penalty fines.

Thank you - to everyone who has taken part in over 56 community clean ups and to those who report cleaning problems to us.
