Environmental health

Environmental health services influence the basic quality of life for the people of Southampton from birth to death.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral which has been mined and processed. It has been widely used in a variety of building and household products due to its unique properties, which include: high tensile strength, thermal stability and resistance to chemicals and electricity. There are three main types of asbestos which have been used commercially.

Animal health and welfare

Trading standards is responsible for the enforcement of animal health and welfare legislation. This protects the welfare of livestock on farms, at markets and during transportation.

Pollution

Environmental Health Services undertake a number of functions that include managing air quality, contaminated land, asbestos, statutary nuisance (noise, dust odour ect.), commercial premises and rubbish accumulation.

Geothermal Energy

Southampton has led the way in the development of the first geothermal energy and combined heat & power (CHP) district heating and chilling scheme in the UK.
