Geothermal Energy
Southampton has led the way in the development of the first geothermal energy and combined heat & power (CHP) district heating and chilling scheme in the UK. In 1996 the scheme celebrated its tenth anniversary. This brochure looks at the history of the innovative scheme, its present operation and the prospects for future development.
Features
Since the pioneering launch of the initial geothermal project in 1986, Southamptons district heating scheme has employed up-to-the-minute technology and a host of ground-breaking features.
The Scheme
The district heating scheme in Southampton closely resembles a huge domestic central heating system. Hot, treated water circulates underground from the heat station to a growing number of customers in the city centre and is then returned for re-heating.
