Bringing together education and open spaces – a consultation on the loss of open space at Lordshill
Purpose: Southampton City Council is undertaking an important consultation on the building of a new school in the city. Following the Learning Futures review of secondary education, Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill opened in September. At the moment students are being educated across two sites, in the buildings formerly used by the Millbrook and Oaklands Community Schools. During the review a major aspiration to emerge from local people was for the new school to be located on a neutral site rather than either of the existing school sites. With this in mind, the city council has used a number of Cabinet decisions since the review to make clear its desire to see a brand new school on the Lordshill Recreation Ground. Whilst funded by central government, it is the city council’s responsibility to build the new school which will be the site for Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill. As part of this process to build the new school we must consult with you. This consultation includes the potential loss of open space. The total size of Lordshill Recreation Ground is 53.02 acres or 21.41 hectares. A new school could mean the loss of up to 11.51 acres or 4.66 hectares of public open space, which is equal to approximately 22 percent of the total recreation ground.
