Unaccompanied asylum seeking children

We are urgently looking for carers to foster unaccompanied asylum seeking children. These children have left their homes and are claiming asylum in the UK because of war, persecution, or lack of safety in their country of birth. As a Local Authority, we have made a commitment to look after them and to provide a secure and loving place to live.

As a foster carer specialising in asylum seeking fostering, you can provide a safe environment in which to teach these children the skills they need to successfully build a new life in the UK and ways to overcome their traumatic past whilst their asylum case is considered.

Fostering children who are seeking asylum does come with its challenges but is also hugely rewarding as you see them settle into their new life in the UK.

Many of the children have been separated from their families, either in their homeland or during transit to the UK. As you can imagine, they are often extremely distressed and frightened as a result of the overwhelming experience they have been through. You don’t need to be an expert in these sorts of situations; just willing to learn. We will fully support you with specialist training and a supervising social worker to help you provide a stable and welcoming environment.

We ask that you accompany the child to immigration meetings. You will also need to help the child access education, support them in day-to-day living, respect their culture and faith, and help non-English speakers learn the language.

The same fostering assessment and checks are required to become a foster carer for unaccompanied asylum seeking children as any other child or young person.
