Housing strategy for older people 2003-2007

The city wishes to meet the housing aspirations of older people living in Southampton and is committed to ensuring that they have decent homes to live in which will enable them to secure and maintain their independence.

This housing strategy for older people for Southampton has been developed in response to the Government’s requirements detailed in “Quality and Choice for Older People’s Housing – A Strategic Framework”. It provides a local framework for the future direction of housing solutions for older people who are owner-occupiers, renting privately and those in social housing in Southampton.

The development of this strategy was overseen by a steering group, a sub-group of the Supporting People Core Group, and included representatives from Southampton City Primary Care Trust, Social services, Housing services, Environmental health and consumer protection, registered social landlords, Southampton Staying–Put, representatives from sheltered housing tenants groups and voluntary organisations for older people such as Age Concern - Southampton and the Older Person’s Forum.
