Additional licensing for HMOs

The Housing Act 2004 allows local authorities to apply to government for a scheme in their area called Additional Licensing for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs).

We intend to make an application to government for this type of scheme. We would like all HMOs to be included and for the scheme to be city-wide. However no decisions have been made with regard to the detail of the application. Additional Licensing is flexible and can be targeted at certain sizes/types of HMOs and certain areas. We are currently seeking your views on this.

The new definition of an HMO as detailed in the Housing Act 2004 means that shared student housing would be classed as Houses in Multiple Occupation and could be part of any scheme.
