Mistake in junior policy

This page contains important information and an apology about a mistake in the published school Admissions Policy for oversubscribed places in applications for Junior School places starting in the 2012-13 school year.

The mistake

Recently the City Council’s Admissions Team noticed a misprint in the published criteria for parents applying for Junior School (Year 3) places for the 2012-13 school year.

Parents and carers reading the misprint would probably have concluded that the Council had removed the priority that it gives to children with siblings at a particular school in school admissions.

If this happened, it is possible that some parents and carers may have changed their school place application as a result of this wrong information. The Council wanted to take the earliest opportunity to correct this mistake, which is now correct online.

In addition, the Council will be writing to all parents and carers in the City of children currently subject to an application for a school place in Junior school. Having picked up upon this mistake at this point, no child should be disadvantaged by it in respect of the school place that they secure.

Oversubscribed places policy

The same policy for oversubscribed places will be applied to all school place applications to local authority maintained schools, (and other schools following the local authority’s admissions policy), and this will include high priority being offered to families with children with siblings already at the Junior school applied to, just as will be the case for Infant schools, Primary schools and Secondary schools maintained by Southampton City Council.

The Council will not apply a different and wrong subscription criteria to these children purely on the basis of what was published as a misprint.

Apology

The Council fully accepts its error in having published this information incorrectly, and unreservedly apologises for any distress or concern caused as a result to parents, carers or children.

Resubmit your application

Any parent or carer who would like to resubmit their application for a Junior school place as a result of this information should contact the School Admissions Service on 023 8083 4048 to discuss any changes in the school place preferences that they would like made to their original application.

While we do not anticipate that this mistake would have resulted in many parents / carers submitting different applications, the Council’s Admissions Service will help them to review the application they have made to identify any changes that they would like made to the school place preferences they have expressed as a consequence of this error.

Details of the correct oversubscription criteria that will be applied to all applications are available to download below.
