City Centre Primary School expansions

Southampton is facing unprecedented demand for primary school places, largely due to an increase in the number of children being born in the city. While it had been anticipated that our expansion plans would give us enough school places, we now know that we need to expand more schools.

In response to the increased demand for school places, the Local Authority are proposing to expand the following schools:

Bassett Green Primary School
The proposal is to increase the number of pupils that the school can admit to year R from 60 to 90, from September 2013. This would see the school expand from 420 to 630 places.

Bevois Town Primary School
The proposal is to increase the number of pupils that the school can admit to year R from 30 to 60, from September 2013. This would see the school expand from 210 to 420 places.

St John's Primary and Nursery School
The proposal is to increase the number of pupils that the school can admit to year R from 30 to 60, from September 2014. This would see the school expand from 210 to 420 places.

The first stage of the consultation ran from 27 September until 25 October 2012 and after considering all the responses received, we have decided to proceed to the next stage.

A further four weeks of consultation started on Friday 23 November and responses were welcomed until Thursday 20 December.

A statutory notice which contains details of the expansion proposals has been placed at the entrances of all three schools and has been published in the Daily Echo. The notice, the complete proposal document and the cabinet papers for this decision are available at the bottom of this page.

Any responses received will be reviewed and a final decision on whether or not to proceed to implement the proposals will be made by cabinet on 20 March 2013.
