Free schools

The government’s free schools policy allows members of the community to establish non-profit making, independent, state-funded schools. Free schools can be established by one or more of the following types of community groups:

  • teachers

  • charities

  • academy sponsors

  • universities

  • independent schools

  • community and faith groups

  • parents

  • businesses (on a not-for-profit basis).

Southampton City Council is happy to work with members of the community to discuss Free Schools proposals. Interested groups can contact the Council using the details at the bottom of this page.
