Newly qualified teachers

We want to secure the best new entrants to teaching and we will ensure that your newly qualified teacher year is rewarding and successful.

All newly qualified teachers have an in-school mentor and/or induction tutor. This could be the head teacher or a head of department depending on the school. All our schools run in-house induction programmes, and also have the option of sending the newly qualified teacher on the authority’s well received Career Professional Development (CPD) programmes.

You can also take advantage of further programmes of professional development. Our CPD leaders in school will ensure that your career progression is fostered.

Newly qualified teachers are also given a ten per cent reduction in timetable for their induction. This will help you to spend time away from the classroom to focus on your development.

Richard's story:

"I always enjoyed living in Southampton, so came back to live and teach here after I graduated. I initially worked as a supply teacher across the city and can confidently say that any teacher can find the personal challenge they are looking for here, as there are a variety of schools with varied catchment areas.

"I now work as a primary school class teacher where the children come from lots of different backgrounds. It may sound clichéd but I experience the joys of teaching everyday as I know I make a big difference to the children’s lives.

"It’s a relief to know that I have made the right career decisions as it took me a long time to discover what I wanted to do with my life. I realised teaching was for me while working at schools for children with special needs in America, Africa and Southampton and have not let anything get in the way of achieving my goal since. I had to go back to study full time many years after I first left education, which made it a big personal and financial challenge for me, but my determination saw me through.

"All of my teaching experiences have been part of a journey that has changed me for the better and made me who I am today. The career development opportunities and support from my school and the city’s teacher network have been incredible. With the right support you really can achieve anything.

"Southampton is in a great location and close to lots of other interesting places so life outside the classroom is just as good. Fortunately, it’s all worked out well for me and I am very happy. I really cannot see myself doing anything else."
