What is the Cultural Strategy?

The Cultural Strategy is a document that aims to express a cultural vision for the city in the future. It looks at the city's current strengths and weaknesses, our aspirations and ways to achieve them. All local authorities are required by the government to produce this document.

Does it just represent the views of Southampton City Council?

No! The Cultural Strategy is produced by Southampton City Council in partnership with as many cultural organisations in the city as possible.

Why is it useful?

The Strategy is crucial because it presents a coherent, powerful overview of cultural activity and aspiration within the city. This raises the profile of the cultural sector in regard to local, regional and national decision-making, and by doing so increases the potential for investment and funding in the sector from many different sources. Forming the strategy also presented a fantastic opportunity to increase communication between organisations and across sectors, which we all know can be very difficult.

What is it used for?

The Cultural Strategy, most critically, represents the voice of the cultural sector in the city's 'Community Strategy'. For more information visit the Southampton Partnership website.

If you are interested in other areas of the Cultural Strategy, such as Heritage, Play, Parks, Sport and Recreation and Tourism, please contact David Baldwin, Libraries, Arts & Heritage Manager.

Where can I get a copy of the Cultural Strategy?

Copies can be obtained from David Baldwin's office, contact details as above.
