Free Leisure Week Family Workshop: Badge Making
Wednesday, Jul 30. DROP–IN between 10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm - 3.30pm
In the Gallery / FREE but please let us know you are coming by notifying the Gallery shop.
Start the holidays by dropping into the Art Gallery to create a colourful, summery badge inspired by the masterpieces around you. Use a real badge making machine with help from artist Roy Brown


Splish Splash: Family workshop (aged 5+)
Tuesday, Aug 5 / Two sessions: 10.30am–12.30pm & 1.30–3.30pm
Education Room / £5.50 per child
Get inspired by the Gallery’s current water exhibition and create your own watery pictures using some exciting art techniques. Think floating and sinking objects, coloured paints, wet brushes and water trays. Lots of fun and you will have all your artwork printed out in digital photo form to take home! With artist Owain Hughes.


Ship ahoy! : Family workshop

Get inspired by Southampton’s maritime history and design and build your own boat to bob around on a lake, pond or even take to the beach this summer. Join artist Owain Hughes and create a junk boat with great float!


Pin-hole Cameras; Family workshop (aged 6+)

Take your own portraits through a pinhole using this amazing photographic technique. With the help of artist Roy Brown you will take black and white photos using nothing more than a biscuit tin. You will see your picture develop before your very own eyes!


Flip Flops and Beach Bags

Express your own style on the beach this summer by creating your own gorgeous unique summer bag and flip flops with designs, patterns, decorations and accessories of your choice. Bag provided, please bring your own plastic plain flip flops.


Plant Pots and Bird Feeders

Got green fingers? Love your garden? Join artist Kate Whyley to design and make beautiful bird feeders and gorgeous garden flower pots that will brighten up your garden even on a rainy day.

Who is your favourite Super Hero? Maybe you would like to think of your own. Join Roy Brown to create your own Super Hero / Heroine costume. You won’t want to take it off!


Garden Chandeliers

Add a touch class to your garden. Using wire, beads, gems and sequins you will design and make a beautiful hanging outdoor chandelier or even chandelier flower basket that will really catch the light and sparkle! It’s your choice, with help from artist Kate Whyley.


Jewellery Making Day

Spend a whole day designing and creating your very own jewellery collection during this fantastic workshop with artist Kate Whyley. Use all kinds of beads, gems, stones and real jewellery findings to create beautiful necklaces, earrings and bangles to suit your personality.

Summer Events for Young People

Punkadelic Bag Design
Saturday, Aug 2 / 10.30am – 3.30pm / Workshop / £15.00.
Workshop suitable for young people aged 13 – 19yrs.
Be outrageous with colour, shape and texture! This workshop will teach you how to design and customise a fabric carry bag to your own unique taste, using stitching, fabric paints and beads. All materials provided but feel free to bring any of your own customisation bits and pieces.

Animation Workshop
Wednesday, Aug 13 / 10.30am – 4pm / Workshop / £20.00
Workshop suitable for participants aged 10 – 16yrs.
Come and learn the secrets of Wallace, Gromit and Ben 10. This is a one-day introduction to ‘stop-frame’ animation techniques used in film and television.
You will make, draw and animate your own creations with digital video cameras, computers and the help of film-maker Pete Harvey. All materials provided.

Summer Art College
3 days: August, 14 – 16 / 10.30am – 3.30pm / Workshop / £15.00
Workshop suitable for young people aged 13 – 19yrs.
This three-day course aims to develop drawing and painting skills, leading to a final painting on canvas. The workshop includes techniques of under-painting, acrylics and mixed media. Participants are requested to bring their own primed canvas, any size permitted. Suitable for young beginners or more experienced students who want to build on existing skills.

“Biff, Bam, Pow!”
Wednesday, Aug 20 / 10.30am – 3.30pm / Workshop / £15.00
Workshop suitable for participants aged 10 – 16yrs.
Drop in and ‘toon’ out with this one-day workshop in comic-book art.
You’ll get tuition, tips and advice on creating characters and designing pages to make your own comics. Styles from Marvel to Manga will be examined.
The emphasis will be on pencil drawing and inking but Photoshop techniques will also be discussed.

Punkadelic Fashion Design
Friday, Aug 22 / 10.30am – 3.30pm / Workshop / £15.00.
Workshop suitable for young people aged 13 – 19yrs.
Another opportunity to go wild with fabrics! This workshop will teach you the art of creative tie-dyeing, as seen on all the catwalks this season. Please provide a selection of clothing items you wish to customise. Ideally white, must be 100% cotton for dye to fix.
