The Artlease Scheme
Whether you are a large or small company, paintings can be displayed in your reception, boardroom, or any public or office areas. Original and distinctive works of art can enhance both traditional style interiors and contemporary offices. A number of paintings are also of special local interest to Southampton and Hampshire. In addition to enhancing your working environment, you will be investing in the conservation of historical works of art. The modest lease fee sponsors the conservation work of your chosen paintings and frames. Paintings are always examined and treated prior to lease in order to be displayed in the best possible condition.
If you are interested in artlease, we will arrange for you to view the paintings in our art store. Once a selection has been made the conservation department will arrange the transportation for you.
For further information regarding the hire charges and terms and conditions please contact the artlease conservation officer on 023 8083 2203.
Loans from the city to temporary exhibitions world-wide
Each year the city lends approximately 25 works of art from its collection to a range of historic and contemporary art exhibitions throughout the world. Many of the exhibitions are seminal in the establishment of the artist's status and impact in art history. The works are appreciated and enjoyed by substantially larger audiences than at Southampton which builds upon the reputation of the city art gallery and its collection. For more information about loans email the Registrar clare.mitchell@southampton.gov.uk or telephone 023 8083 2152.
Art gallery library and records
Southampton City Art Gallery maintains history files relating to all artists whose works are in the permanent collection as well as a small library containing related monographs, publications and exhibition catalogues. These records are made accessible to the general public through a supervised appointment scheme and are also accessible to staff and freelance workers involved in the interpretation of the collection. The book library is maintained by a volunteer and the Registrar manages access to gallery files. For more information email the Registrar clare.mitchell@southampton.gov.uk or telephone 023 8083 2152.
Slide library
Southampton City Art Gallery maintains a slide library containing some 20,000 images. Slides cover all types and styles of art of all periods and includes slides of works in the permanent collection. The slides can be borrowed by members of the public for renewable one month periods free of charges. The service is run on an appointment only basis by a volunteer and is fully accessible to all members of staff. For more information email the gallery art.gallery@southampton.gov.uk or telephone the Slide Librarian on 023 8083 4563.
Art ID service
Members of the public are welcome to bring original art works in their possession to the gallery for discussion with a member of the collections and conservation staff. The gallery cannot give valuations but can advise members of the public how to obtain one or how to investigate the possibility of having a work conserved, if appropriate. The service operates on an appointment only basis and is managed by the gallery Registrar. For more information email the Registrar clare.mitchell@southampton.gov.uk or telephone 023 8083 2152.
