Titanic Commemorative Events: 10 - 13 April
Background History
At 11.40pm on the 14th April 1912 RMS Titanic struck an iceberg near Newfoundland in the North Atlantic.
At 12.20am on the 15th April the crew was given the order to send away women and children in the ship’s lifeboats.
Titanic sank at 2.20am on the 15th April.
Of the 1523 people that lost their lives 549 came from Southampton.
The disaster, which made headlines across the world, had a devastating effect on the people of Southampton
2008 Events : 10th - 13th April 2008
Southampton commemorated the 95th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic with a series of events and services held across the city in April 2007.
Following on from last year's successful programme, the proposed outline for 2008 has been agreed.
The programme covers the 10th, 11th, 12th & 13th April 2008 at various venues throughout Southampton.
It includes the successful elements of 2007 combined with some new unique events that will attract world-wide interest which include:
