Sea City: April - October

Sea City is Southampton’s annual festival which promotes and celebrates the city’s maritime heritage and relationship with the sea. Sea City takes place between April and October and is a collaboration of dozens of events and activities. The events for 2008 are in the planning stages, however below are a few already taking place. Floating Feasts Exhibition - A Gastronomic View of Journeys by Sea
Saturday December 2007 until September 2008
Maritime Museum, Town Quay
One of the main attractions of sea travel is its leisurely pace and the opportunity to sit with one’s companions and enjoy good food often excitingly presented.
Catering for passengers, whether on a cruise or using the ship to get from one place to another, is a major activity for all shipping companies.
Southampton Museums have been recording changing food fashions through menus and other records, and our material spans almost one hundred years.We can’t actually feed you, but we can whet your appetite!
Opening times
Tues – Sat 10am – 4pm, sun 1-4pm
Closed on Mondays.
Adults £2, Children (aged 7-16) £1, Children under 7 Free, Family ticket £5 (2 Adults, 3 children), Concessions £1, School groups by arrangement.

The museum is housed in a medieval wool store which was later used as a prison. Names of 18th century French prisoners of war can still be seen, carved into the stone walls.The museum houses one of the finest collections of Maritime History, and highlights include Docks Remembered – showing the history of the port from its Victorian foundations to present day container port and cruise terminal. There are also builders’ models of some of the most famous passenger ships associated with Southampton, including the Queen Mary, and an interactive area “Sail to Steam” for all the family.


Marine Life Talks
National Oceanography Centre
Marine life talks at the National Oceanography Centre, on the first Thursday of every month, have been running for 8 years, 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.
There is a wide range of subjects from the shore to the deep ocean covering
wildlife, work done locally and further afield. The talks are open to the public there is no charge and no need to book.

Titanic Commemorative Events 10 - 13 April
Southampton commemorated the 95th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic with a series of events and services held across the city in April 2007.
Following on from last year's successful programme, the proposed outline for 2008 has been agreed.
The programme covers the 10th, 11th, 12th & 13th April 2008 at various venues throughout Southampton.
It includes the successful elements of 2007 combined with some new unique events that will attract world-wide interest.

Seawork Exhibition 2008
Tuesday, 10th June 2008 until Thursday, 12th June 2008
The event will incorporate DiveWork and RibWork, Seawork is the largest international commercial maritime exhibition and business forum ever held in a European working port environment.

Southampton Boat Show: 12 – 21 September
International boating exhibition hosted in Southampton for 40 years, this event welcomes marine buyers from all over the world and injects some exciting activities to encourage attendance form the surrounding community, including Try A Boat, and water rescue scenes by the RNLI.
