Records of Merchant Seamen

Many Southampton families will have at least one merchant seaman or woman in their family tree. Southampton Archives has a number of sources to help you find out more about a seafarer's career and give you a flavour of what life at sea was like. Sources which give names and details of individual mariners include:

Crew lists for Southampton registered vessels 1863-1913 >
The Central Index Register of Merchant Seamen 1918-1941 >
• Furness Withy Shipping Line records (incorporating Prince Line and Royal Mail Line)
• Records of disaster funds (including the Titanic Relief Fund), 19th-20th centuries
