Exhibitions at Southampton Museums

The Maritime Museum

Titanic exhibitionThe Maritime Museum is proud to display a vivid and moving new Titanic exhibition.
“TITANIC – Southampton Remembers” reveals the story of the crew members that lost their lives, a very large number of whom came from Southampton, and the passengers who were onboard. The exhibition uses archive film footage, interviews with survivors and unique artefacts to provide an insight into the tragic loss of the Titanic and why the disaster continues to fascinate, 95 years after she went to her watery grave.
This exhibition is on permanent display.

Floating Feasts
A Gastronomic View of Journeys by Sea

Floating FeastsOne of the main attractions of sea travel is its leisurely pace and the opportunity to sit with one’s companions and enjoy good food often excitingly presented. With this in mind we invite you to visit our new exhibition: Floating Feasts: A Gastronomic View of Journeys by Sea
Catering for passengers, whether on a cruise or using the ship to get from one place to another, is a major activity for all shipping companies. Southampton Museums have been recording changing food fashions through menus and other records, and our material spans almost one hundred years.

We can’t actually feed you, but we can whet your appetite!

This exhibition can be seen from Friday 5th October 2007 to Sunday 14th September 2008

Saxon Southampton Revisited

Saxon pendantThe story of ‘Hamwic’, Southampton’s Saxon town, has been retold at the Museum of Archaeology in a vibrant new exhibition.

This permanent display explores the origins of Hamwic, everyday life in the town and its role as a major port in the 7th - 9th centuries AD.
There are new panels and activities to enjoy, while popular features such as the replica loom and rubbish pit are still on display.

Star exhibits are two gold pendants found in graves at the St Mary’s football stadium in the city. These have been generously donated by Southampton Football Club.

A new design scheme has refreshed and revitalised the gallery. Old and new visitors alike will find much to interest and delight.
This exhibition is on permanent display.
