Homework help
If you can visit your local library you’ll find we’ve got lots of information books on subjects like: The Tudors, Romans, famous people, weather, volcanoes, dinosaurs - you name it we’ve probably got a book about it! And if we haven’t we’ll set about getting one for you.
When you are in the library you may need to use the catalogue on the computer to find the books you want. To find the general subject area you might want to look at the printed subject index for children. If you need any help or you don’t have much time - ask us, we’re happy to help.
All our information books are given a number so we know where to put them and so that you can easily find them. We class our books using the Dewey classification scheme – it’s probably the same as in your school library. If for example you want a book about dinosaurs, have a look on the computer or on the printed index and it will tell you that dinosaur books have the class number J568 (the J just means junior). That number will quickly help you find a book on the shelves, as long as our shelves are tidy!
You can access the Internet for free (parental/guardian permission needed) and there is no charge for printing homework. Check with your local library for details or call in. Most libraries have photocopiers too.
If you need a newspaper from previous months, we have them in the Reference library to look at - check for titles.
If you ever get really stuck, dictionaries and encyclopaedias can be a good place to look and they are available in print in the library or on the web.
There are lots of fantastic web sites you can look at too, full of info for your homework.
You can phone us 023 80832598 or email us at childrens.library@southampton.gov.uk and we’ll do our best to help you get that horrible homework on teachers desk asap!
