Information for Adults
Which books should my child be reading?
In the children's library we get lots of questions about reading. We do have books to support your child's reading progress at all levels. We don't stock reading scheme books like your child may read at school, but we do have a great range of quality children's books which you and your child will love to read.
We want you to enjoy reading with your child and whilst we can give you recommendations and guidance if you ask for it, the best thing to do is enjoy reading whatever it is your child chooses. Picture books can be enjoyed by anyone at any age so don't stop reading them when your child moves onto 'proper books'!
When children are just beginning to read independently we recommend trying the children's books marked with a caterpillar sticker on the spine (beginner readers).
When your child's able to tackle a higher level of text but not yet a child's novel, there are storybooks available. These books are marked with a butterfly sticker on the spine.
Junior fiction and 11up fiction for older children is also available at all our libraries.
Do you have Barrington Stoke books?
Yes we do stock Barrington Stoke books! - they specialise in publishing books for dyslexics and struggling readers.
How many books can my child borrow?
Children and Adults can borrow up to 30 items from the library. No fines are charged on Children’s books.
Do you have children's books in languages apart from English?
Yes we do - they are mostly dual text picture books i.e. they have the story written in both English and another language such as Panjabi or Polish. Many people enjoy sharing these books with their children. Call into your local library or for a larger selection. The Central Children's Library is a good place to look.
