Macmillan Library Project
Libraries offer a wide range of books on health issues. This includes a collection of materials about cancer provided in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support. A new scheme launched in January 2008 means that local people living with cancer and their families and carers now have greater access to cancer information. The project is a partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support and Southampton City Council.
Under the new scheme, all of the six main libraries in Southampton Central, Shirley, Bitterne, Portswood, Lordshill and Woolston will each hold a comprehensive collection of books, leaflets, tapes, CDs and DVDs about cancer, as well as specialist information for children and black and minority ethnic communities. This is all accredited for accuracy and reliability by Macmillan Cancer Support. The five smaller branch libraries and two mobile units will hold a smaller collection.
The resources can be borrowed from any library using a library card and can be reserved free of charge if they are on loan to another borrower.
