How do I get involved
Employers
Make your workplace more reader-friendly by using some of the ideas listed below.
Set up a workplace library and encourage borrowing. The library could be of books brought in by staff or donated by the company. The local library service can help you set this up.
Link up with your local schools- encourage your staff to become reading volunteers. They can help local children and adults who want to gain more reading confidence
Magazines in reception – have magazines and newspapers available at reception, in staff rooms and canteens
Reading groups – a workplace reading group can help staff get to know each other better and work more effectively as a team. Local libraries can give advice about setting up a reading group and provide multiple copies of books for free.
Swap a book at work day – Ask staff to bring in a book to swap with a colleague. Or have a mystery book swap, where staff bring in old books wrapped in newspaper and then select a mystery book from the collection. Try RaW Swops at your workplace
Children’s library exchange - create a children’s library within the workplace. Encourage staff to bring in books their children have grown out of so they can be borrowed by other parents (or grandparents, uncles and aunts)
Pledge your support by sponsoring a specific NYR project
Parents
Spend 10 minutes a day reading with your children. This will give them a head start at school as evidence shows that reading from a young age means they develop a love and reading, achieve more at school and learn
Join your local library. It’s free and easy to join. There is lots going on at the library including storytimes, activities, reading schemes all available for free.
Try and put aside at least twenty minutes a day to read for pleasure. You could read in your lunch hour, before you go to sleep or even in the bath! What about switching the television off for half an hour.
