Supporting People

The Supporting People programme offers people the opportunity to improve their quality of life. It provides a stable environment which enables greater independence. We support people who need help to live in their own home. For some this will be to help in a crisis such as when homeless. For others we provide help to stay at home as people get older.

We are committed to provide a better quality of life and to help people to live independently and keep their tenancies. In Southampton we support more than 6000 people including:

  • homeless people
  • older people
  • people with mental health problems
  • people with learning disabilities
  • young people at risk
  • teenage parents
  • people experiencing domestic violence

Southampton's Supporting People programme has been awarded regional champion status by central government. You can contact us by calling 023 8083 4239 or emailing supporting.people@southampton.gov.uk.

Complaints

Your right to complain is important to make sure that the services being delivered by Supporting People providers are of good quality and take into account your needs as an individual. We are responsible for ensuring that you have a mechanism for making complaints about services and that these services meet at least the minimum standards with regard to complaints.

We would prefer any formal complaint regarding a Supporting People service to be made to the service provider first. It will then be dealt with through their own complaints policy and procedure.

If you wish to discuss a complaint face to face, an interview will be set up. We will not normally take up a complaint on your behalf unless any of the following apply:

  • where a formal complaint has already been made by an individual using the provider’s Complaints Policy and the organisation has failed to act on the complaint

  • where the organisation’s formal complaints processes have been exhausted and no resolution of the complaint has been reached

  • where the complaint involved abuse

  • where the complaint relates to a serious breach of health and safety which has not been resolved by the provider

  • where another agency or department makes a complaint regarding a service that indicates there may have been a breach of contract

Southampton has a Safeguarding adults policy which explains what Southampton City Council will do, if the abuse of a vulnerable person is suspected and/or reported. For more information on this please see our Safeguarding adults pages.
