Major Developments in Adult Social Care

You may have seen or heard recently about some big changes happening in adult social care in Southampton. These pages help explain some of the things happening and give you the chance to have your say about them.

So what is happening?

There are lots of projects in development at the moment which are changing the way we provide care services to some of the most vulnerable adults in the city. There are reviews of service areas taking place alongside changes of policies, systems and the way we buy in services from outside the council.

Why are so many projects happening all at once?

We are responding to the changing needs of the people who rely on our services and preparing services that will cater for those needs now and in the future. We have limited money to spend so we need to ensure we spend it on services people want. We are always looking at how we deliver our service and reviewing what we do so that we can improve. We are doing so much now to allow us to change the way we approach providing care and we will work towards personalising services.

What does personalisation mean for people and why are we doing it?

Personalisation will allow people to use their own care budget to buy in the services that they want, rather than the services the local authority wants to provide. People will have more choice of whether to buy care from the local authority or from the private or voluntary sector. This will mean that we will see how our services can support and improve lives rather than just provide basic “care”.
