In Southampton, a simple tool has been devised to support the managers of local care services to audit and monitor the quality of the service they provide. This was developed to respond to the findings of a number of investigations where certain themes or failings had lead to serious safeguarding concerns.
Using a simple format, the Best Practice in Care Checklist outlines the features of best practice in care provision and the management of care services under a range of headings. To further assist providers, the checklist includes references to the relevant Outcomes required in the Essential Standards of quality and safety published by the Care Quality Commission.
Local care services are encouraged to use the Best Practice in Care Checklist on a regular basis to highlight achievements against the standards contained in the document and to identify areas for further improvement.
It is hoped that managers will find the Best Practice in Care Checklist a useful tool that complements the Provider Compliance Assessment process to provide a clear focus for service planning, monitoring and development.
