Following an invitation to take part in a new project bid for by Eurocities, an organisation that links 127 cities across Europe, Southampton City Council is now part of an 18 month project, called Local Authority Observatory Southampton. Funded by the European Commission, the project looks at the quality of services supporting people aged 16-65 facing economic and social difficulties. This is more commonly known as the European Union “Active Inclusion” strategy.
Southampton is one of five European cities taking part in this project. The other cities involved in this project are Stockholm, Rotterdam, Prague and Bologna. Southampton City Council will be comparing its approach to housing related support, employment and training with those of the other European cities involved. The project's overall aims are to identify the common aspects in social support services and to promote the quality services provided by the five cities. A major part of this project will also be the creation of links between local social service delivery, national policy and European strategy across the cities.
