Safeguarding adults: information for care professionals

What is Safeguarding Adults?

The council’s adult social care department has produced an overarching policy called the “Safeguarding Adults Policy” which explains what we will do if the abuse of a vulnerable person is suspected and/or reported to us.

If you suspect that a vulnerable adult is being abused you should contact the local adult contact team whose telephone number is given below who will be able to give help and support. If you suspect that a criminal offence has been committed or medical help is required you should take immediate action to arrange this.

Who might be at risk?

People who are vulnerable and are unable to protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation due to a physical disability, mental ill-health, learning disability, age or frailty.

Who might abuse?

Abuse can happen anywhere and can be carried out by anyone. This could be family, friends, neighbours, paid staff, carers or volunteers. It could also be other service users, tenants or strangers.

Who to contact if I suspect a vulnerable adult is being abused?

If you think someone is being abused, please call us at the adult contact team. The adult contact team phone number can be found on our contacting us page. For more information on what to do you can request a copy of our leaflet, Protecting people from abuse, or download it from the link below. There is also an easy read version called adult abuse is wrong for people with learning disabilities.
