Community and day centres

Community care and day care centres are there to give older people (especially those who are frail and housebound) a chance to have a day out away from home.

Once you have applied for a community day centre placement, the deputy manager from Community care services will visit you in your home, to find out more about you and introduce you to the available centres. There are many day centres across Southampton, so you can visit a centre in your neighbourhood, or locally to you.

We will provide transport to and from the day centres. One of our drivers will meet you at your front door and take you to the day centre in a specially adapted mini-bus.

When you arrive at the day centre, you will be greeted by the person who will be looking after you during the day. If you need help to take medication, or if you have any special needs, then this person will make sure that those needs are met.

Refreshments and a two course lunch are provided for you throughout the day. If you have any special dietary needs, for example if you are a vegetarian or if you are allergic to nuts, these needs will have been taken into account.

Throughout the day, there is the opportunity to take part in a number of activities, examples include such as board games, arts and crafts, exercises, word games and puzzles, raffles or carpet bowls and hockey.

Other entertainment is arranged throughout the day, such as visiting choirs, speakers and demonstrations, musical items, parties and side shows.

Members of the day centre are involved in planning events and a printed programme is available. The day centres also organise outings which in the past have included visits to the New Forest, pub lunches, cream teas and theatre trips.

Is there a day service available for people who do not speak English as a first language?

Yes, there are a number of day centres available for people who may have ethnic, cultural or language problems. Please speak to the contact centre for more information about our multi-cultural services.

Is there a cost?

There is a fixed charge per visit. The Adult Contact Team will be able to tell you how much this is. If you complete a financial assessment, you may not have to pay. For more information please contact us.
