Brownhill House
Brownhill House is located in Maybush, a residential suburb in the west of Southampton. Originally built as a private residence in the late 1800s, a purpose built extension was added in the 1960s. A further extension was built in 2003 to provide an additional two-floored wing.
Brownhill House provides short term residential care for nine people and rest home accommodation for three people. Although there is one permanent resident Brownhill is mainly used by people with short term needs.
It also houses a day centre run by Southampton care association, an information centre and office accommodation for the Western community rehabilitation team.
The Residential rehabilitation unit provides care and rehabilitation for people admitted directly from the community or following discharge from hospital. There is also an orthopaedic rehabilitation unit which has facilities for 16 people. Both units have specialist input from an elderly care consultant geriatrician who visits weekly. Rehabilitation is provided in a supportive environment in dedicated accommodation which includes dining and lounge facilities. The Rehabilitation service aims to assist people in regaining their abilities, to improve confidence and to retain their independence wherever possible. Care is provided by Social services staff and rehabilitation support is provided
by the Western community rehabilitation staff.
The Western community rehabilitation team provides a range of supportive therapies to service users receiving rehabilitation including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing and social work. Service users are encouraged to undertake tasks such as laying tables and preparing hot drinks and snacks if these are within their physical capabilities.
Brownhill House staff have close working relationships with local GPs, district nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, geriatricians, psychogeriatricians and other health professionals including chiropodists, dentists and opticians.
All staff providing medically based therapies are fully trained and receive clinical supervision from the therapy heads for each profession.
