Community centres

Freemantle community centre photoThere are 16 community centres and one resource centre in Southampton each run independently. They are owned and supported by the Council but run by Community Associations made up of local residents. For all booking enquiries please contact the specific centre directly, contact details can be found on the left hand links. All the centres are ideal venues for social events from children's parties and wedding receptions to coffee mornings and community events - prices start from £7 per hour. If you run, or would like to run a group see if your community centre has space.

Volunteer at your local community centre

Community centres are run by local volunteers who are responsible for the day to day running of your community centre. They work to provide a community space for social, educational and recreational activities for residents in their community. They are always looking for new people to help. All types of skills are needed; secretaries, treasurers and lettings officers etc. If you don’t want a specific role don’t worry. All centres want community minded, enthusiastic people to help whatever their level of involvement. Most volunteers find it only takes a couple of hours a month.

Your Southampton lists some of the things you could do to get started and where to go next to get involved in your community.

Community association resources

In addition to providing support through our community development workers we now have an online resource library. There are how to guides, templates, case studies and links to online training; we hope all of which will enable you to improve your experience of running a community building or getting involved with your local community.
